Component 3E requires that teachers be flexible and responsive. Lesson plans should be designed to allow for an alternative if it is needed; for example, if technology is not working properly. Furthermore, lessons should be adjusted to match the pace needed by the students, and may need to be adapted smoothly during class. If students do not understand the material, a different approach can help, and simply repeating the lesson without changing it is unlikely to increase student understanding. While moderating discussions, or taking questions from students, teachers can and should accommodate student responses and ideas into instruction. Finally, teachers help students develop responses to real-world problems by helping them make connections between what they are learning and their daily lives.
