This component covers the purposeful design of assessments. Assessments take different forms based on the teacher's goals. While assessments frequently are intended to measure what a student has learned at a given point in the school year, the completion of assessments can also be used as a teaching tool for the student and teacher. For example, formative assessments are primarily used to gather information about student understanding, and can be a way for the student to monitor his or her progress. The teacher is better informed by formative assessments as well, and can adjust future lessons accordingly. Summative assessments, which are typically graded and measure learning, should be in accordance with learning outcomes and state standards. Tests, portfolios, essays, short answers, and exit tickets are all considered types of assessment.
