Component 3D breaks down the purposes and types of assessment used while instructing. A major part of this is monitoring student behavior, which is done partially through awareness of student engagement and responses. Student understanding results from building upon prior knowledge and experience, and providing scaffolds where they are necessary for progress. Formative and summative assessments are in-class methods that can allow teachers to gather information and monitor learning; however, they are not the only way. Students can learn to self-assess, analyzing their own progress and utilizing metacognitive skills to increase their benefit from lessons. Teachers are responsible for changing lesson plans and teaching style to incorporate what they have learned from assessment during instruction.
