Component 3B deals specifically with techniques for questioning students, and for beginning and maintaining discussions. The purpose of discussion is to deepen understanding of key content and promote collaboration among students. When implementing questioning techniques in the classroom, effective teachers ask open-ended questions that have more than one correct answer and encourage deep thinking, and they respond thoughtfully to student input. Often, the teachers will use a student example or incorporate student reflections into the lesson. During discussions, teachers must give students time to put their thoughts into words, and allow them to finish their answer respectfully. Distinguished teachers will actively involve the whole class rather than allowing discussion to center around several outspoken individuals. When teachers utilize these discussion techniques, student motivation and engagement should increase.
