This domain emphasizes the importance of knowing students as individuals. This includes being aware of their current skill levels, so that teachers can provide scaffolds for new material based on what students already know. Building relationships with students, and keeping their backgrounds and interests in mind when framing a lesson, can be powerful. Teachers should be able to pinpoint a student's strengths as well as where he or she is struggling, and take steps to help him or her improve on strengths and overcome weaknesses. The responsibilities of teachers also include being familiar with IEPs and other relevant information that can help improve their teaching practice.
